Pause & Reflect

Revival, History, and the Hope of the Gospel: Reflections on A Great Awakening

By Dr. Jeff Webb

This week, ads throughout television and the internet are promoting a new movie during Easter week. I believe God’s Spirit has prompted me to offer some wisdom as we consider whether to visit this showing and, if so, how we should wisely interpret its meaning.

With the release of the new film A Great Awakening on Good Friday, many Christians are reflecting on one of the most influential spiritual movements in American history: the First Great Awakening of the eighteenth century. That renewed interest can be healthy—if it leads us to rediscover what genuine revival truly is. But it also presents a danger if the story is simplified, romanticized, or used to promote modern political agendas such as Christian nationalism.

A careful look at Scripture and history reminds us that true revival is not a political movement, not a national program, and not the product of human enthusiasm. Revival is a sovereign work of God that renews the hearts of individuals and reforms the life of the Church.

Understanding the Great Awakening requires both historical honesty and biblical clarity.

Supporting Our Youth Group

Our Youth Group attended Camp Timber-lee on February 27 and returned safe and sound! This trip provides a wonderful opportunity for students to be introduced to Jesus or grow deeper in their faith alongside other believers and seekers. We were especially excited to welcome four new Youth Group members on the trip this year.

To make this experience possible for everyone, each student contributed toward the cost. The Youth Group is working to raise an additional $5,500 to cover the remaining expenses, and GBC has already generously contributed $4,300.

There is no expectation to give beyond your means, but if you feel led to support this effort, you can give through the link in the “ONLINE GIVING” section of this email or by writing “Youth Scholarships” in the memo line of your check.

The Youth Group will be sharing about their trip this Sunday morning, March 8, at 10:30 AM.

Count It All Joy

One of the great joys of being a child of God is that we get to manage his money. Whether you are tithing or giving an offering, Grace Bible Church online giving is now available multiple ways.

  1. Through the Church website under the "GIVE" TAB (drop down menu) on the HOME page.
  2. By simply CLICKING HERE and then choosing the fund you would like to give to.
  3. By activating the GBC QR code (below) by using your camera.

As always, you can give cash or check by placing it into the offering plates in the back of the sanctuary; or, by mailing it to: Grace Bible Church Attn: Treasurer, 1109 S. Main Street, Washington, IL. 61571.

You won't believe how much fun Hot Soup Lunch is until you come see for yourself! We have a fabulous time together and mingle around two steaming pots of hot soup. We'll be looking for volunteers to cook a soup each week. This week we are having Cheesy Broccoli and BBQ Pork Chili. You can bring a side or just come. And as usual, the church will supply crackers, cutlery, bowls, and such. This is a great opportunity for our church to get together and invite friends and family to join us in fellowship. There is a short prayer and opportunities given by God for us to encourage one another and lift others up. We'll meet on Thursdays at noon until March 26. We hope to see you there!
